The moon...only mostly dead.

SPACE.com -- Lunar Flash Mystery Solved: Moon Just Passing Gas

It's one of those myths that is true enough most of the time: the moon is a cold, lifeless world without an atmosphere and not much going on. Well, not quite. According to an old acquittance of mine, lunar outgassing seems the likely culprit for something called Transient Lunar Phenomena, or TLPs, brief bright flashes of light seen when looking at the moon through a telescope. So the moon is only mostly dead, but not all the way dead, and there's a big difference.
